Recently loft beds have become popular, especially for children, teens and young adults. One of the main reasons is because of its space saving quality. Actually the loft bed was used in the early history of beds, when homes were very small. A sleeping platform was placed above part of the living area on poles. Day to day activities took place beneath the family sleeping area. Today the reasons to choose a platform bed are much the same-to be able to use the space under the sleeping area for play, relaxation, study, or storage.

The platform needs guard rails on both sides of the bed, even if one side is against the wall. The mattress should be more than 3 ½ inches from the guardrail on both sides. The loft will need a ladder firmly attached when set up.
Children's loft beds come in a lot of fun styles. You will want to involve your child in choosing the right bed that fits his/her personality and interests. You can choose from theme beds, tent beds, and whimsical beds to beds with a slide and a variety of built ins beneath the sleeping area. When the area is going to be used primarily for study and computer use, you will want to choose a bed with a desk, shelving, and drawers. You will want to be able to provide good lighting. A comfortable chair or beanbag for reading or listening to music is a good option.
Many styles come with the option of having another bed under the loft that is placed to form an L shape. This gives your child or teen space for a friend to sleep over. Before you buy, spend some time looking at all your options to make sure you make the right choice.
